Herbal Tincture Dosing
The Dropper Dose Protocol
The herbal dropper dose protocol is a low-dose tincture approach Amina Eastham-Hillier developed over years of clinical practice to support patients with Lyme disease, mould illness, and complex chronic infections who are highly sensitive to herbal medicines. Rather than starting at a standard therapeutic dose, each herb is introduced 1 drop at a time, building gradually across days. The aim is to help the body adapt to each herb, reduce the intensity of Herxheimer-style reactions, and support the detoxification pathways before stronger antimicrobial herbs are considered. A downloadable PDF guideline is available for patients currently working with Amina.
- The dropper dose protocol starts at 1 drop of a single herb in 100 ml of water and increases by 1 drop per dose, per day.
- Each new herb is introduced only after tolerance to the previous herb is established, typically 2 days apart.
- The protocol is designed specifically for Amina's most sensitive patients, including those with multiple chemical sensitivities, significant gut dysbiosis, or suspected parasites.
- Doses increase gradually to a ceiling of around 30 drops per herb, twice daily, before herbs may be combined into a single formula.
- This is an individually prescribed protocol. It is not a self-prescribing guide. Dosing is reviewed and adjusted at each consultation with Amina.
Why a dropper dose approach
Many patients who come to Amina have already tried multiple treatments and found that even low doses of supplements or herbs trigger strong reactions. This is common in chronic Lyme and mould illness, where the body's detoxification and immune pathways are under sustained load.
The dropper dose protocol addresses this by slowing the introduction of each herb to a pace the body can accommodate. Starting at 1 drop in 100 ml of water after food may seem very small, and it is intended to be. The incremental build gives the liver, gut, and immune system time to adjust before the dose climbs.
Amina developed this approach from her own clinical experience supporting well over 8,000 chronic cases. It is not derived from a textbook template; it reflects what she observed actually reduced reactivity in her most sensitive patients over many years of practice.
Who this protocol is prescribed for
Amina prescribes the dropper dose protocol in 2 specific situations. First, for patients who experience multiple chemical sensitivities or allergies and who are likely to react strongly to standard tincture doses. Second, for patients where there is a reasonable clinical picture suggesting multiple stealth infections, gut dysbiosis, or parasites, because foundation herbs need to be established before antimicrobial herbs are introduced.
Not every patient needs this approach. For those who do, it is typically a starting phase rather than a permanent prescription. Once tolerance to the foundation herbs is clear, Amina moves the protocol forward.
- Multiple chemical sensitivities or a history of strong reactions to supplements
- Suspected gut dysbiosis, stealth infections, or parasitic load where 'die-off' reactions are a concern
- Patients who have previously had to stop herbal or naturopathic programmes due to reactivity
How the dosing pattern works
The protocol introduces 1 herb at a time. On day 1, the first herb (for example, St Mary's Thistle for liver support) is taken as 1 drop in 100 ml of water with the morning dose, and 2 drops with the afternoon dose. On day 2, morning rises to 3 drops and afternoon to 4 drops. If there is no significant reaction, a 2nd herb (for example, Chamomile) begins on day 3 at 1 drop while the first herb continues to increase.
This staggered introduction continues herb by herb. Each herb builds by 1 drop per dose until reaching approximately 30 drops, taken twice daily. At that point, with good tolerance established across all prescribed herbs, Amina may combine them into a single formula bottle for simplicity and for the synergistic benefit of herbs working together.
All herbs are taken diluted in water, always after food. The slow pace is intentional and is not a sign that the protocol is ineffective. Amina's clinical observation is that this gradual approach produces more consistent, lasting support than starting at full dose and then having to reduce because of reactions.
The downloadable guideline PDF
Amina provides a printable PDF guideline for patients who have been prescribed this protocol. The PDF sets out the day-by-day dosing schedule in a clear table format, making it easier to track progress at home.
The PDF is intended for use alongside, not instead of, active consultations with Amina. Because each patient's herbs are selected individually and doses may be adjusted based on how they respond, the PDF is a companion tool rather than a standalone self-treatment guide.
If you are a current patient and have not yet received the guideline, please contact Amina through the contact page.
This protocol is always individually prescribed
The specific herbs in a dropper dose prescription vary from patient to patient. The example herbs named in Amina's guideline (St Mary's Thistle, Chamomile, Calendula, Marshmallow) are illustrative. Your own prescription will reflect your clinical picture, symptom history, and current load.
Amina holds a Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy), a Diploma of Nutrigenomics, and more than 30 years in clinical naturopathic practice. She also holds qualifications in Medical Herbalism and Nutrition. Her prescriptions draw on all of these disciplines and are reviewed at every consultation.
If you are not yet a patient but are curious whether this approach may be relevant to your situation, the naturopathic consultations page explains how an initial appointment works. Consultations are available online and by phone, which means location is not a barrier to working with Amina.
